Water and transportation have been the two driving forces marking Glendale’s 100-year history. In 1882, the area which was once an empty desert, was transformed chiefly by the efforts of four men; William J Murphy, MW Kales, William A. Hancock and Clark Churchill, who collectively developed the Arizona Canal Company Project. Using 225 mules and whatever machinery they could lay their hands on, the team completed the canal in May of 1885. Due to the stability of the water supply offered by this canal and the Roosevelt Dam, Glendale became an agrarian hub, specializing in lettuce, melons, cotton and sugar beets.

Down through the decades, Glendale became one of the most culturally diverse cities in the area, and its growth was highly dependant on its early settlers who were mostly Hispanic, Japanese and Russian who moved there from California in the late 19th century. World War II bought modernization to Glendale, Arizona in the form of Thunderbird Field where civilian pilots were trained for the army.

Designed by artist, Millar Sheets, and resembling the mythological Thunderbird, this field would later become the Thunderbird American Graduate School for International Management. These developments spurred the need for services and utilities, medical facilities, airports, parks, libraries and schools.

The Arrowhead Towne Center, which opened in 1993, and the surrounding community of Arrowhead Ranch is one of the most desirable places to live in the area. Glendale has become the sports destination for the entire state of Arizona. The Jobing.com Arena and NHL Coyotes draw many fans to the area as well as the University of Phoenix Stadium, a state-of-the art structure, which is host to the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl and BCS Championship games and housed the 2008 Super Bowl.

There are also a variety of events that attract thousands of visitors every year. Some of these include: the Glendale Chocolate Festival in February, the Glendale Glitters every December and the Glendale Jazz and Blues Festival.

Glendale AZ offers a wonderful quality of life and many amenities for people of all ages.
